Biography

Jennifer Witton studied at the Opera School at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under the tutelage of Sarah Pring where she was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal award in 2015. Most recently, she has performed the title role in Massent’s Cendrillon for Glyndebourne Touring Opera, given recitals at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, sung the roles of ‘Noble Orphan’ in Der Rosenkavalier and ‘Cugina’ in Madama Butterfly for Glyndebourne Festival Opera and performed as a soloist in Bernstein’s MASS at the Royal Festival Hall under the Baton of Marin Alsop.

A Concordia artist, Jennifer has enjoyed much competition success.  Most recently she won the 2018 John Kerr English Song award the 2017 Roderick Lakin memorial award  and the 2017 Grace Keagy Award. She has also received prizes at the Maggie Teyte Competition, North London Festival of Music, Emmy Destinn Awards, AOESS Awards, Hampshire Singing Competition and was delighted to be selected as a Britten-Pears Young Artist, studying french repertoire with Natalie Dessay, Laurent Naouri and Roger Vignoles.

Passionate about straight theatre, Jennifer recently played the Narrator in La Boite à joujoux (Debussy) at the Byre Theatre, St Andrews with future performances planned.  Jennifer is also the founder of Word and Tone, a company dedicated to creating pieces of music theatre combining poetry, prose and song.  On the theatre stage, she has debuted with the Royal Shakespeare Company performing the role of Juno in The Tempest at the Royal Shakespeare TheatreStratford-upon-Avon and Barbican Theatre, London directed by Gregory Doran with music by Paul Englishby.

Other Operatic highlights include covering the role of Euridice for the Royal Opera House production of Monteverdi’s Orfeo with director Michael Boyd and conductor Christopher Moulds, Madame Herz in Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor for The Opera Box at the Thames Festival, covering the roles of Donna in Handel’s Rinaldo and Chocholka in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, both for Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Other roles include Rosa Isabella (Leith)for ROH/GSMD, Page Le Roi malgré Lui for Wexford Festival Opera, GirlCarousel Opera North , covering Soprano soloistOne Night in Vienna for Raymond Gubbay , ‘Lauretta’ Gianni Schicchi for Fulham Opera and Lucia Rape of Lucretia (Britten), Eleonora Le donne curiose (Wolf-Ferrari), Aphrodite Phaedra (Henze) for GSMD Opera.

Highlights on the concert stage have included performances at Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Barbican Hall,  Royal Albert Hall, Cadogan Hall, the Wigmore Hall, London festival of song, Chichester Festivities and the Oxford lieder festival.

Jennifer’s discography includes ‘Voices of London’, a newly commissioned song cycle with pieces by Graham Ross, Raymond Yiu, Joseph Atkins and James Lark.  She is also featured on the ‘Music and Speeches’ CD produced by the RSC with the music of the 2016-17 production of The Tempest.

Future engagements include covering the title role in Cendrillon (Massenet) for Glyndebourne Festival 2019, recitals for the Bedford Square Festival and the Royal Overseas League and a tourwith Word and Tone visiting a number of venues around the UK.
